The Federation
After the war, the terrachians and the tir’a formed an allegiance to facilitate trade, defense, and exploration. This Federation has, in the intervening decade, grown to encompass its own bureaucracy. Among this is the Department of Justice which oversees both the Marshals and Constables Services. In addition to those branches, the DOJ also includes Special Branch, a service that investigates larger threats to Federation peace, and the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) responsible for investigating peacekeeper misconduct (think of it like Internal Affairs).
The Federation Parliament and its central administrative offices are located on an uninhabited world called “Midway”. It sits on the border between what was terrachian space and the tir’a empire. The Parliament is made up of voting represenatives from each of the tir’a and terrachian colonies as well as their homeworlds, voting representatives of each of the other “full member” races (the weirwann and avopham), and non-voting “observers” from each of the so-called “protectorate” races (koumuch, anyl, and echodi), 138 members in all.
In addition there is a fledgling military made up of ships and personnel from all the member races and colony worlds. The Federation Fleet Command (FFC) serves primarily as a space patrol, providing protection for member worlds from internal threats such as piracy and any external threats that might evidence themselves. Also under Fleet Command’s mandate is the Fleet Landing and Exploration Agency (FLEA). This is an elite unit tasked with proving new worlds for colonization and exploitation. The FFC also maintains its own Science Corps which provides research into everything from FTL technologies to weapons systems.
