From “The Hammonds of Ore City: Deconstructing a Dynasty” by Cyril Linkus, Stanford University Press – Despite everything the Hammonds were, in some circles much admired, even revered for the way they kept the mines open and kept the town running.  A lot of Ore City people got rich riding the coat-tails of the Hammonds during the war and turned a blind eye to their excesses.
