O’Donal’s “gift” is the ability to recognize patterns that other cops overlook. His mind works like he’s following a series of hyperlinks, bouncing from one segment of the data to another till he reaches a conclusion. It’s a non-linear process using inductive reasoning. It’s Holmesian in many ways. Sherlock Holmes used induction — not deduction — a kind of reasoning that draws generalized conclusions from a finite collection of specific observations. In other words he works the probabilities to determine the most likely conclusions (lex parsimoniae).
