The existing evidence will probably never be sufficient to prove it out.

Excerpt from the final recommendations of the Federation Special Commission on Post-war Augmented Reintegration: In the end we are left with few good choices. Their psychopathology is in-bred, designed as part of their genetic make-up. Many of the surviving chimera-humans (augmented humans or “auggies” in the vernacular) have fled to the fringes of Federation space where their skills are in great demand as mercenaries. For the rest, the panel recommends conscription into the Federation Landing and Exploration Agency (FLEA). A role where individuals with their level of aggression, physical strength and resilience can be put to appropriate service to the Federation, but remain outside the social constraints of civilized society.

Statement of Brigadier General Armstrong Cutler, Commander 501st Augmented Rangers to the Federation Joint War Crimes Tribunal: We were the first line of defense against the dark-eye menace. What weaker men have termed “crimes” we saw as aggressively prosecution of the civilian mandate against the tir’a. Call it what you will, I remain convinced that our actions, terrible as they are seen in the stark light of peacetime, saved many, many lives amongst our front line troops. I refuse to be remorseful for doing my job well.
