Koumuch are an aggressive pre-industrial (agrarian, iron-age technology level) semi-humanoid race. Massively built and very strong, they are often found working in space docks and construction settings where technical expertise is secondary to a strong back. The Koumuch have developed knives and other steel objects. Their are in the humans sphere of influence and this has lead to a certain amount of exploitation. Most notably, slavery. The Interplanetary Antislavery League has been instrumental in bringing the plight of the Koumuch and other races to the attention of the governing bodies on Earth and Midway.
Society
The Koumuch are at a patriarchal feudal level of society with city-states not yet forming larger countries. There are about 200 of these city-states. Each city-state is ruled by a king that has an area of influence of 50 miles(about how far a unit of soldiers can march in a day). The population within the area of influence of a city are comprised mostly of farmers and other labors. That the king does with as he wishes. The king’s soldiers are paid from the laboring of this enslaved population. To become a soldier, a male Koumuch must compete in battles of strength at his tenth year. If he endures this he is trained for five years before joining the other soldiers. Most communication between cities are in the form of treaties or tributes since neighboring cities are usually at war.
Religion
Each city-state has its own local gods, mostly tied to rivers and boulders. For example at city of Vekofuch, there is a large glacial erratic that the locals believe is imbued with the spirit of Fauch. Fauch is a male god that is known for his strength and bravery in battle. Most gods have common attributes involving strength and bravery. Although there is Kaach, a river god of Boumuch, who it is believed to eat the children of the locals and steal knives. The Koumuch, who have been transported off planet have changed the religion greatly by creating gods of planets and asteroids. Since many work on Ceres, this has become a new god representing freedom.
Free Koumuch
To paraphrase an old Earth saying, the only free Koumuch is an off world Koumuch. With ideas like freedom and democracy all off-world Koumuch are not allowed to return to their home planet due to the the upheaval they would bring with them. Many free Koumuch have been integrated onto the earth colony at 106 Piscium d, which they refer to the New Home god.
